As a hitting coach, at the Pryor Baseball Farm we focus on the following key points for evaluating a batter. We focus on both physical mechanics and performance metrics. Here are the essential areas we assess in our CRUSH program and with youth players 12 and under we simplify the evaluation and training with key foundational skills, however the training will still evaluate some performance metrics, but will be mechanically heavy in the beginning to set foundation. Once a player moves into the performance phase, we will look at more objective data to guide training programming and in the results phase, we are more data driven to close the gaps as it gets harder, and a higher level of training and discipline is needed to achieve results. DISCIPLINE TODAY or DISAPPOINTED TOMORROW! 1. Bat Speed/Exit Velocity (EVALUATION) Why it matters: Higher bat speed often correlates with better power and overall performance. Measures the power of a hitter's contact with the ball. How to assess: Use radar guns or tools to measure bat speed. If unavailable, visually assess swing tempo and exit velocity. Measure exit velocity, or observe the quality of contact (e.g., hard-hit balls vs. weak grounders). 2. Balance and Posture (SET) Why it matters: Proper balance and posture allow for better control and power transfer during the swing. How to assess: Watch for stability throughout the swing, especially at the point of contact. Poor balance may result in inconsistent hitting. 3. Timing and Rhythm (SEPARATION) Why it matters: Good timing allows the hitter to square up pitches more effectively. How to assess: Evaluate the player’s ability to adjust timing based on pitch speed and location. Are they consistently late or early? 4. Bat Path (SWING) Why it matters: A good swing path optimizes the hitter’s ability to drive the ball and adjust to different pitches. How to assess: Check if the swing is level, on-plane with the ball, and adaptable to various pitch locations and speeds. 5. Lower Body Mechanics (SWING FINISH) Why it matters: The lower body generates a large portion of power in the swing. How to assess: Ensure proper hip rotation and leg drive during the swing. Weak lower body mechanics can lead to reduced power and inconsistent contact. 6. Bat-to-Ball Skills (CONTACT) Why it matters: Ability to consistently make contact is critical for effective hitting. How to assess: Track how often the player makes contact during practice sessions and in games. Focus on strikeout rate, swing-and-miss frequency, and contact quality. 7. Pitch Recognition (VISION) Why it matters: The ability to identify different pitches helps the hitter make better swing decisions. How to assess: Look at how well the player identifies fastballs, breaking balls, & off-speed pitches. Track their swing-and-take decisions on various counts. 8. Approach and Mental Game (PLATE PLAN) Why it matters: A disciplined approach and strong mental focus can make a big difference in-game situations. How to assess: Observe how the player handles at-bats, particularly their plan for different pitches, counts, and pressure situations. Are they adjusting or sticking to the same approach? 9. Power Potential (FARM STRONG) Why it matters: Power can change the game, turning a single into a double or home run. Speed and power training in the off season and maintenance during the season are critical especially in higher level play. How to assess: Check exit velocity (if available), distance on hits, and body strength. Evaluate whether their swing is built to generate power. These key points provide a comprehensive framework for evaluating a batter and identifying the disconnections so we can begin to get the player connected for consistent PERFORMANCE and RESULTS. This is the first step within our CRUSH program: identify areas for improvement and tailor the hitter’s development program accordingly. THIS IS NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL PROGRAM.
